Preston

I’m Preston, I’m named after the first portable internet, or Packet Radio Network. I was created in 1971 and one way or another I’m still in use today. Scroll down for more of my story, or click below to download my colouring page.

The first Packet Radio Network was created in 1971 by a group of amateur radio enthusiasts, the Tucson Amateur Packet Radio (TAPR) group. Instead of using wires to connect computers, this network allowed them to communicate through radio waves. It worked by breaking down data into small packets and sending them from one computer to another. These packets hopped between computers until they reached their destination, even across long distances. This revolutionized the way computers communicated, and laid the foundation for technologies like Wi-Fi and mobile data. Today, PRNs are still used in a range of applications, from amateur radio to emergency response and disaster relief
