Cornelis
My name is Cornelis, I built the first ever submarine in 1620. It was a great honour to have King James I as a guest on board. This makes King James I the first monarch to venture underwater. Scroll down for more of my story, or click below to download my colouring page.
While working with the English Royal Navy, in the year 1620, the Dutch inventor Cornelis Drebbel built the first submarine. This remarkable vessel was crafted using wooden planks and covered with greased leather to make it watertight. With up to sixteen crew the submarine relied on oars for propulsion. During its demonstration, the submarine remained submerged for an impressive duration of three hours, capable of voyaging from Westminster to Greenwich and returning, while maintaining a steady depth of four to five meters. In a historic feat, Drebbel invited King James I to join him on a test dive beneath the Thames, making the monarch the first ruler to venture underwater. Drebbel's submarine paved the way for future underwater exploration, inspiring many to study the mysteries of the ocean and its amazing creatures.
